My girls are in second grade. I think they are average students. (Maybe above average students would find this easy, I don't know.) They received an assignment last week to find a famous African-American person they would like to due and report on. They were to make a time line with at least 5 events and have pictures for each one. After they gathered their researched they were to write two paragraphs on two events on the time line of their choice. Dress up as this person and present it to the class.
Okay, I think that is too much for a second grader. They can not gather research on the internet. (They could have at least taken them to the library to check out a book on the person they would have liked to due their report on.) I do not like that I am stuck doing TWO reports! I don't find that fair. I haven't enough busy work.
With the said my girls did enjoy learning about history. I think they could have assigned a project much more on their level.
I am just saying........................

Caitlin is in first grade and has to do the same thing with a president. So basically I had to research him and teach her about him and then I have to create a presentation she can do. First grade!!
It's a requirement by the state. They have to be able to research, create a visual presentation, and so on. I can't stand projects either, but it's the dumb requirements set by higher powers that make us have to do them. Teachers don't like it either. Believe me. They try and find the easiest way to meet those requirements, but sometimes that's impossible as well. It's probably not even educators making the requirements so that is why it is dumb. Avery wanted to do a powerpoint for his president presentation. Ugh. Just wait til 5th grade. You should see all that Sam has to do for his Black history project. It is like 10 pages long, plus the presentation, and poster. Craziness!
I'm with you. It just makes the students dependant upon their parents, instead of being responsible for their own work. My parents never helped me with homework!
An update! Hooray for the update! I was just thinking I hadn't heard from you...we've lost touch since my poop b-day cake report. Anyhow...I agree- it sounds like work for parents. What would happen if you really let them "do the research" and gather the materials for their presentation. Would it pass even if it was a mess? Educators should see what first grade presentations really look like, right? Hmmm? I'm not there yet. I might try and teach them a lesson when I get there.
Seriously when I read this, I was thinking how unbelievably hard this would be for a second grader... thus how much work it would be for the mother. And then I was tired! We miss your kids! Thanks for your opinion on my quilt. I found the sheets at a thrift store here in town I like to frequently shop at.
