In February of 2005 I did a special edition newsletter. I asked everyone to type of their "love story/how they met". I was looking through the computer to see what all I could delete and I came across our entry. I thought it was funny. So here it is... I wish I could find our first date picture.
Jenny’s Version
The first time that I saw Matthew was on a Wilderness Conference when I was 14. He was in my group and I thought that he was so sweet and so cute! I saw him a few more times when he picked Leah up for Girls Camp. I also saw him at quite a few Stake activities.
He asked me out on my first "real" date a few months after I turned 16. He came to a dance that my dad called Joe to make sure that Matthew was going to. We danced every song, but one. Another friend claimed one dance and informed me that if I kept this up with Matthew Moffitt that people would think that we were an item. I got all excited and said, "You think!" After the dance Matthew asked me out. I was so excited that on my way home I screamed to get out some of my excited then called my dad!
Our first date was like prom for me. I got to wear make up for the first time. I got a new outfit. I told my dad before Matthew got there to be sure to make a fuss over taking a picture of us together. No matter what I said to discourage it, to take one! My dad did, and had to talk Matthew in to stand closer to me. I kept that picture in my dashboard for a while. (I got teased for that by my brothers...actually I still do.)
He asked me out a few other times while I was in High School. Nothing that Matthew would call memorable. Matthew then went on his mission, and we exchanged a few letters.
Then a few years pasted...I was home in between semesters to see my family, and my younger brother, Brad yelled to me that Matthew wanted to talk to me. He asked me if I wanted to go out and of course, I said yes! I had two other dates that weekend that I had forgotten about when Matthew asked me. It was a crazy weekend!
When Matthew got to the house he seemed a little nervous and that wasn’t usual since in the past he always seemed so confident. We had a great time and ended back at my house playing pool and watching a movie. It was around 12am and Matthew kept saying he should go so we walked out to the truck and talked another hour. Before he left we exchanged numbers and I told him it was too bad he wasn’t going to be out at school, I’d really had a lot of fun.
I walked away having had an awesome time, but wasn’t expecting too much since he had told me in the pasted that he’d call. When I came in Dad said, “that seemed to go well!” I said, “yes it did. Matthew talked more tonight than he ever had." I told Dad that I wasn’t expecting much though. (At this time I wasn’t really looking to date anyone seriously)
To my surprise he emailed me the next day and told me he really had fun. He continued to email and call me the next week while I was out to school. The last time he called he told me that he had changed his mind and that he was able to get the class schedule that he needed and he would be out to Utah in a couple weeks. I was excited, but was still a little unsure.
Matthew moved fast for me! On our first date he kissed me and I called my Dad on my ride home and told him that Matthew Moffitt just kissed me! Dad didn’t even say anything, which he usually would. (I think he was doing cartwheels on the other line!) We had so much fun mostly just talking, and he quickly made me feel so comfortable around him. I called my Dad one day while I was at school and told him how this was all too good to be true. That this was like a fairytale. Matthew was so perfect! He said he was glad because that is just how it should be.
Matthew proposed, on November 18 (the day after Harry Potter came out.) He called me at work and asked if I wanted to get together for Ice Cream after work. I said sure but I wasn’t going to get off until 1am or maybe even later. He was quick to say that was fine. I was a little suspicious that that night was the going to be the night. Of course, I was hoping that every night would be the night. My co-workers by this time were holding up there left hand every time that they saw me, wanting to know if he had done it that night or not.
I got off of work and Matthew met me at my apartment. He had a gallon of Three Musketeer Ice Cream in hand. (My favorite ice cream that is nearly impossible to find!) He kept asking if I wanted some, but I told him later, I wanted to tell him about my night. Finally, I finished and he got some spoons. I took one bite, then another, and I felt it in my mouth. I started to panic. Matthew was looking at me and I slowly took it out of my mouth. He took it from me and washed it off and then came back and got on his knee. He confessed his love and asked me to marry him. I, still shocked, sat there for a second to take it all in and then said yes.
Matthew’s Version
The first time I remember seeing Jenny was at church when her dad was telling her to take some lady somewhere. I remember Leah coming home from Girls camp telling me, Jenny Bradford likes you. My response was, who is Jenny Bradford? They said you know President Bradford’s daughter. I knew who he was (the scary looking guy on the stand at church).
Anyway all the stuff Jenny wrote about happened and then as Andy Griffeth says, the curtain closed and time passed to just a few years ago. Jenny’s little brother Brad was talking to Holly on the phone when I walked by. Holly said, Brad says Jenny is home so I told Holly to give me the phone and I got Jenny on the phone and asked her out.
I showed up and when she came out of the back I thought, Wow she looks hot! She had just gotten back from Florida and had a very nice tan. She was reading the second Harry Potter book for which I made fun of her. Later I also fell in love with the Harry Potter books. We went to Antioch and it was raining but my windshield wipers were broken so that metal was scraping on my windshield. I was too cheap to fix it for myself (and never had girls in my truck of course) so by the end of the night I think Jenny’s nerves were fried. Anyway, we both had a good time and ended up back at her house playing pool and watched a movie. We spent about an hour at my truck saying goodnight and I think both of us were thinking this was going great. I changed some plans I had made to stay in Tennessee for a semester and went back to school. The next day after I got back into Utah we got together.
Our first date in Utah I wanted to be special, so I used one of my friends and I, "true dates." We developed this one over a period of months. We go up to Sundance area and walk around in the mountains (my friend had a real cool cabin that was usually a good place to go hang out, but on this one I was solo). Then (this is the great part) when driving back down you “suddenly have a good idea” (shows the girls your spontaneous they love that) you stop at the Sundance general store and buy some homemade lollipops. They are really good and come in all kinds of flavors. Then you walk around some more and talk. Works like a charm, obviously. It went on like this and we and spent literally everyday together until she went home a few days before me for Christmas (which by that time I had slapped a ring on her finger of course).
Speaking of “slapping a ring on her finger” that happened on November 17 (the day after Harry Potter came out at the movie theater). Jenny asked me today what day it was, so obviously it was more important to me than her. We had been looking for a particular kind of ice cream that Jenny liked. It was the Three Musketeers candy bar ice cream that is very hard to find. I saw it in the grocery store and picked it up. I let it melt a little bit and slid the ring into it. I then went over to her house that night and we ate ice cream. I strategically placed the ice cream container so that the portion she was eating had the ring in it. She kept on picking around it, but finally got the right spoonful in her mouth. She got a weird look on her face and then pulled the ring out of her mouth. I took it and washed it off, being very careful not to drop it down the sink. I got on one knee and proposed. She took a second to say anything and I was a little worried for a second. I had said a little prayer before I went in that she would answer what was right, but when she hesitated I just thought “NO just say yes!” She then said, “Yes.” And that is all I have to say about that.

I remember being there when you and Matthew came home from a date and played pool. I remember asking Lindsey if Ya'll were dating and she just shrugged her shoulders and said, I don't know. It might have been that first date after his mission, it seemed like you were nervous..haha. I just thought that ya'll would make the perfect couple!! I loved the two stories though, if I had Chad write our story it would be like 2 sentences long, where as mine would be like 5 pages long, Matthew did good haha!!
That is funny. I didn't know that you were there.
If I remember right when I asked him to write "his story" I told him that it had to be more than one line! When I told him to look on the blog last night because I had added something that I came across, he said, "Wow, I sound like a jerk!" I told him him didn't at all it was just his dry sense of humor!
